30 St Mary Axe – better known as ‘The Gherkin’ – is one of the most distinctive and iconic buildings in the City of London’s world famous financial district. Completed in 2003, construction was supported by a two way radio system supplied and installed by Brentwood Communications.
Asked to provide radios for security staff, banksmen and crane operators, the main challenge we were set was to ensure full coverage throughout the 41-storey site in order to support health and safety protocols and operational efficiency.
We built a network around Motorola MotoTRBO DMR handsets. At the cutting edge of digital two way radio technology, MotoTRBO radios offered power, premium audio quality and an advanced range of additional features to assist operations.
To ensure reliable coverage throughout the site, especially for crane operators, we installed repeaters to boost signals from handsets as well as a digital antenna system (DAS). We also supplied RSM earpieces to aid audibility above the noise of machinery. To support health and safety, we supplied additional ‘crash’ handsets to crane operators and site coordinators. These radios were set aside for emergency use, to make sure critical messages got through when required..
